Abundant Harvest

This year’s Creationtide explores how God measures true value. We are allowing the Gospel writers from the lectionary readings to sit in conversation with voices of the psalmists. Each pairing invites reflection on worshipping God with whole lives, understanding worth as God’s beloved, and working faithfully with what is entrusted.

Our Sunday mornings open up the discussion and the ABIDE groups on Wednesdays at 7pm and Fridays at 1030 at the Vicarage take the conversations deeper still.

Sunday 7 September — What is worth your worship?
Psalm 139:1–5, 12–18
Luke 14:25–33

Worship isn’t partial or casual—it demands our whole selves. Psalm 139 reminds us that God deeply knows every aspect of our hearts, inviting an authentic and total commitment. Luke 14 sharpens this invitation, challenging us to carefully consider the cost of true discipleship, calling us to tell and proclaim with our lives the good news of the kingdom. Wholehearted worship also means seeing and valuing creation as God’s sacred gift, worthy of care and reverence.

Sunday 14 September — How do we measure worth?
Psalm 113
Luke 15:1–10

True worth isn’t measured by status or achievement, but by the joy God finds in us—especially when we feel lost or overlooked. Psalm 113 celebrates God lifting up the humble and overlooked, affirming their divine value. Luke 15 vividly portrays God’s persistent joy in seeking out the lost, teaching us that true discipleship involves nurturing and teaching others about God’s transforming love. God’s joy includes all creation, calling us to treasure even those creatures and places society may overlook or undervalue.

Sunday 21 September — Why does work matter so much?
Psalm 15
Luke 16:1–13

Work reveals the integrity of our faith. Psalm 15 underscores the importance of ethical, faithful living as a reflection of true devotion to God. Luke 16 challenges us to handle worldly responsibilities wisely and honestly, as our stewardship tends to the world, caring for people and resources entrusted to us. Caring responsibly for creation in our everyday tasks and decisions is central to this faithful stewardship.

Sunday 28 September — What is worth worrying about?
Psalm 37:1–9
Luke 16:19–31

Worry grows when trust in God fades. Psalm 37 encourages calm trust in God’s justice and care rather than anxious envy or fear over life’s apparent unfairness. Luke 16 warns of misplaced comfort and false security, transforming our perspective by confronting injustice and calling us to live in solidarity with those who suffer. Anxiety over environmental harm must give way to action grounded in trust that God’s justice includes healing for the earth.

Sunday 5 October — Why is wisdom worth it?
Psalm 67
Luke 17:5–6

Today is Harvest Sunday in our churches. Even small faith holds immense potential. Psalm 67 expresses confident hope that God’s blessing flows through faithful people, bringing abundant goodness. Luke 17 highlights how even the smallest seed of faith can unleash God’s power, inviting us to treasure and sustain the sacredness of creation through daily acts of wisdom and care. Wisdom guides us toward living sustainably, honouring God’s abundance through mindful care of the earth and its resources.
