Thine be the Glory!

Read John 20:11-18 (choose your own version using this link).

Now, isn’t nice to hear Good News for a change! That first Easter morning, coming out of his tomb, Jesus, brought resurrection with him. The empty tomb is rather like the Tardis. It’s larger on the inside – for it contains resurrection. What does resurrection mean? Everything that can be redeemed, will be redeemed; everything that can be healed, will be healed; everything that can be restored will be restored; and everything else? Well that can be made new.

Alleluia, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, alleluia!

Easter Sunday 2020 will be an Easter Sunday like no other before it. We cannot sing the great Easter hymns inside our churches, but we can sing them in this way…

At 10am on Easter Sunday 12 April 2020 we call on all who want to celebrate the resurrection to go outside and sing Jesus Christ is Risen Today and Thine be the Glory at the top of their voices! You could sing them…

  • in your garden
  • in your street
  • like an Italian from your balcony!
  • on your permitted daily walk in your local park
  • by the sea or by a lake

…all of course keeping safe spatial distance.

Prayers For Easter Day

He has led captivity captive
and given gifts to his people
Sing to the Lord and bless his name;
tell out his salvation from day to day

By your mighty resurrection;
by your glorious ascension;
and by your sending of the Holy Spirit,
good Lord, deliver us.

Father of all, we give you thanks and praise,
that when we were still far off
you met us in your Son and brought us home.
Dying and living, he declared your love,
gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory.
May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life;
we who drink his cup bring life to others;
we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.
Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us,
so we and all your children shall be free,
and the whole earth live to praise your name;
through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Sing, choirs of heaven!
Let saints and angels sing! Around God’s throne exult in harmony! Now Jesus Christ is risen from the grave! Salute your King in glorious symphony!

Sing, choirs of earth!
Behold, your light has come! The glory of the Lord shines radiantly! Lift up your hearts, for Christ has conquered death! The night is past, the day of life is here!

Sing, Church of God!
Exult with joy outpoured! The gospel trumpets tell of victory won! Your Saviour lives; he’s with you evermore! Let all God’s people sound the long Amen!

Risen, ascended Lord,
as we rejoice at your triumph,
fill your Church on earth
with power and compassion,
that all who are estranged by sin
may find forgiveness
and know your peace,
to the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
