ABIDE resources for 10-11 November

Allow yourself time for this moment with God

Make it special. Will you make a cup of tea? Do you want to sit in a special place? Will you light a candle? Take five deep breaths. Check-in with how you are feeling – in body, in mind, in spirit. Take five more deep breaths and ask God to abide with you in this moment.

Bible reading for today

ISAIAH 43:1-7

But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel:

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you, I give people in return for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; I will say to the north, ‘Give them up’, and to the south, ‘Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth— everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.’

Imagine this

Make a (mental) note of five things that you are frightened about.

Someone once said that fears are stories we tell ourselves.

Choose one of your five fears and think through the story it is telling you.

How does the hearing the story make you feel?

Do the Bible reading a second time

Take some time to read the Bible passage again slowly (and out loud if you can). What word or phrase stands out as important? You might like to say it gently in your heart a few times to allow it to sink in even deeper.

Enjoy a chat with God

Talk with God about the word or phrase that stood out for you as you looked again at the Bible reading. Tell him about your day. Take time to savour the Lord’s Prayer with him.
